Shards of Consciousness

The Shards of Consciousness podcast has been on the air for eight ten months now. Thirty-four episodes are under my belt and I'm more glad than ever that I began doing them. Each week there are a few more listeners. Each week I hope to provide more value.

I have heard that using recording equipment that uses the usb port rather than the analog port would cut down on noise in a recording. I didn't know how true this is until I  finally bought a Logitech USB Headset 350 with a built-in noise-cancelling microphone. This isn't the world's best equipment, but I thought it would meet my current needs. It does.

The Logitech is one of the best recording investments I've made.

Digital signal processing (DSP) is one of the better things that has happened in the recording industry. As the printer has brought a printing press into the reach of most homes, DSP allows us each to have a studio. The unfortunate thing is, that each manipulation of a recording can take it further away from its original sound. I use Audacity to produce the podcast. With my old microphone, I had to use Audacity's noise removal filter. This added undesirable distortions to the podcast. Using the USB equipment, I no longer have to run this filter. As a result, there is less distortion of the signal, and one less step in preparing the podcast. Better sound for less time - what more can I want?

There are a couple of housekeeping details regarding the podcast. First, after this week's episode, I'll be doing a new podcast biweekly rather than weekly.

Second, since most people seem to download the podcast over the weekend, after this week the podcast will be published on Friday. Unless, of course, there is an outcry for the Thursday broadcast.
