Madeleine L'Engle

Another hero has passed on. Madeleine L'Engle died last Thursday - September 6, 2007. She was 88 years old.

I haven't read much of her work. While we have the entire Wrinkle in Time series at home, I only ever read A Wrinkle in Time itself, and that at age 13. It made enough of an impression that I have remembered it ever since. A Wrinkle in Time has been one of the most frequently banned books in the U.S., which to me means it is probably one of the most worthwhile to read.

Newsweek has an interview online with Ms. L'Engle from a few years ago. If you've never read her work, it gives the flavor of who she is. One of my favorite quotes from the interview:

Interviewer: Many people see faith as anti-intellectual.
L'Engle

: Then they’re not very bright. It takes a lot of intellect to have faith, which is why so many people only have religiosity.

I think it's time to read more of her books.
