Find the Joy in Your Life

March 2nd, 2008 by Richard Cockrum

This weekend we’ve been showing The Bucketlist at the theatre. If you haven’t seen it, The Bucket List is the story of two men, both with terminal cancer, who decide to create a bucket list of everything they want to do before they die, then go out and do it.

One of the men, Carter, wanted to be a history professor. Instead he met a girl, they got pregnant, and he dropped out of school to support his family. He spent his life as an auto mechanic, married to the same woman, and still in love with her.

The other, Edward, has chased money his entire life. He’s been married four times, and has one daughter he hasn’t seen in years. He calls his second wife ‘the sequel’. When he is diagnosed with cancer he owns 15 hospitals that all have Two beds to a room, no exceptions. As a result of his emphasis on this, he can’t get his own room in his own hospital, and ends up sharing a room with Carter.

The bucket list is Carter’s idea. Edward finds it, and decides it would be fun to do. The two escape from the hospital and begin their journey.

One of the things on the list is to see the pyramids of Egypt. As they’re looking at the pyramids Carter tells Edward that the ancient Egyptians believed that when you die, you have to answer two questions before you get in to heaven.

  • Have you found joy in your life?
  • Have you brought joy to others’ lives?

Carter makes Edward answer the questions. That’s when Edward talks about…

Ah. Screw it. I had a whole long summary of the movie and what it’s about. The summary doesn’t mean anything. What it’s about doesn’t mean anything.

Only one thing is important, a line that Carter has written to Edward to be given to him after his death.

    Hi Karen,

The times of gathering with the kids to watch a video with chips or popcorn are memories I cherish. Enjoy each one you see.
