Creation of the Heart

March 6th, 2008 by Richard Cockrum

When my children were little I would ask them, What are you imagineering today?

Imagineer is a neat word, a portmanteau of the words imagination and engineering. It calls up images of building in your mind. It denotes using your imagination to create something new from the building blocks that you already have.

What are you imagineering today?

We have all the building blocks we need. We use them every day. Our thoughts, our beliefs are the blocks we move. Our desires, our passion the motive force. Our lives, our world the outcome.

The power is ours. The energy our birthright. Each minute of the day we live the outcome of the creations of our hearts. Each hour of the night we sketch the skein, the outline of the dramas, the comedies, the joys and the sorrows with which we surprise ourselves in the light of the day.

Why? To what end? What meaning is there to the passing joy, the fleeting pleasures that come and go on the backdrop of the sorrow, the illness, the pain and brutality we see each day in our own lives or in that of those destroyed by war, deluge, and starvation?

Does the meaning inhere in the act?

How many of us were held in thrall as Schindler made his list and the Nazi’s tortured and maimed? How many of us thrilled to the blood let by Sweeney Todd? How many of us sang with Judy Garland as she followed the yellow brick road. We have within us a need to experience, to feel the entire range of emotion, to see what we can create.

Is the experience of flesh and blood really that different from the experience of the novel, the movie screen, or the video? All are experienced in the mind. All have their meaning imposed by our beliefs. All are creations of the soul.

So I ask you again. What are you imagineering today?

What worlds do we create? What roles do we play? We are the artists. We are the critics. We are the audience.

What are you imagineering today?

Thanks for the reminder that my thoughts create for me.
(I’m a bit stressed over a situation today so a reminder to stay on the better thoughts is a good thing!)

    Thanks Rick!

    You’re welcome, Karen.

It sounds like you know what you’re imagineering today. Now sit quietly, just watching your breath for a few minutes so you can take one step back from it.

Rick, I first heard that word, “imagineering” in relation to Walt Disney. From that context I view the word as going beyond what we think of as possible. It is a word that defies limits. I love the idea that the word and what it conjures up comes from the heart. What a gift you gave to your children by asking them this question.

    Hi Deb,

It’s good to hear from you. :)

In relation to Disney is where I first heard about imagineering, too. I did some research on it, and they had the word trademarked back in the 60s (though the trademark is expired now).

Planting seeds for the future is one the most important tasks I saw for myself as a parent. I hope this one took root.
