You Built This Blog - Thank You

December 23rd, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Most people who blog have a blog birthday they celebrate. I don’t. I’m not sure how. I originally started this blog on another url in March of 2006 and a couple of the posts were predated to January and February of that year, which was when I first wrote them, so I’ve never been sure whether to count the beginning of the blog on the old url as the birthday or the start of Shards of Consciousness in January of 2007 as the birthday. Then there was the question of why anyone would really care, except me. It’s a small thing, I know, but it’s been niggling at my mind for quite a while.

Then Lisa at Design Your Writing Life helped bring this into focus with her gratitude MeMe for YouYou. She listed all the people who had commented on her blog. I saw that and said Wow! That’s a great idea! So today, as a way to say Merry Christmas, Hanukkah (or any other holiday that people hold dear at this time of year), and as a way to say thank you to all of you who have found something thought provoking or words inducing on Shards, here is a list of all of you who have commented on Shards in the past year or found a post valuable enough to link to.

Thank you. Peace be with each of us today and every day.

Trevor  Trevor’s Writing. Trevor tied for first commenter on Shards and became one of my first blogging friends.Thank you, Trevor.

Lisa said pulling this information out of one’s blog could be a daunting task. She’s right. Any php experts, you might want to think about a plugin. Hint. Hint. Nudge. Nudge. :)

  1. Lyman Reed Says:

Wow, Rick… that is a great idea! I can just imagine how much “fun” it was to pull out all of that data.

Thanks for the inclusion, and Happy Birthday, whenever it was. :)

  2. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Hi Lyman,

Thank you for helping to build Shards.

Pulling out the information could have been harder. I ended up exporting the comments table (sans spam) into a spread sheet. From there it was a matter of formatting, exporting to a text file, and checking the links. It took time, but wasn’t difficult. You’re all worth that, and more.

  3. Marti Says:

And thank you for sharing your thoughts with all of us Peace and joy to you in this holiday season!

  4. Lyman Reed Says:

Thanks for the tips, Rick… that doesn’t sound bad at all. Like you said, just a little time consuming, those who take the time to comment on our blogs really are worth it (which you also said…) :)

  5. John Says:

Thanks to you for creating such a great site and great resource. I’ll be coming back for a long while.

  6. Lisa Gates Says:

Rick, this meme sure looks good at your place. It fits right in with what you offer every day, doesn’t it? Thanks so much for passing it on and have a beautiful holiday!

  7. April Says:

Looks, sounds, and smells like one heck of a party. Must be Happy Birthday in order - whenever it was. Thinking it’s your blog and you can tag whatever birthday to it you want to :)

Thanks for the hospitality. Yours is always a nice place to hang out!

  8. Gleb Says:

    Hey Rick,

Thanks for making the difference by sharing your views and thoughts of the reality. I’m still a faithful reader of yours (preparing to finally become a listener as well), and I’m glad I’ve known you and your blog for this long.

    Happy Christmas!

  9. Lorraine Cohen Says:

Thanks so much for the inclusion in your party Rick

I don’t get back to your blog as much as I’d like. I appreciate the insights and thought-provoking comments that are a trademark of your blog.

Blessings to you and your family.

    Cheers :D
    Lorraine

  10. Lani Anglin-Rosales Says:

    Hi Rick,
Thank you very much for making me a part of this. Also thanks for adding your presence to the blogosphere, it is greatly felt.

Happy Hoildays and blesings for the days ahead. :D

  13. Stephen Hopson/Adversity University Says:

    Rick:

Many thanks for listing Adversity University on this wonderful list! Link love is always welcome, especially at Christmas!

I continue to enjoy your work and encourage you to keep going!

  14. Kirk M Says:

Wow! What a great way to say Merry Christmas, Rick! Makes me want to attempt my own.

Merry Christmas to you with hopes you have a great New Year!

  15. Jeanne Dininni Says:

    Rick,

Thanks so much for the link to Writer’s Notes! It’s greatly appreciated! What a nice–not to mention labor-intensive–gesture compiling all the links from an entire year’s worth of comments! We bloggers know how much work that was!

Several months ago, I began writing link posts on the first of each month thanking the previous month’s commenters, and THAT’S required a great deal of work (though I have come up with a few helpful shortcuts). I can only imagine the complexity of your project–and therefore appreciate it all the more!

Holiday blessings to you and yours!
    Jeanne

  16. Douglas Karr Says:

Thanks for the mention! One note… Sean Rox passed on Geek With Laptop quite along while ago, the articles are no longer posted by him.

The feeling is mutual. I just got your book. Now I have something new to read over Christmas.

  21. Richard Cockrum Says:

Thank you for the suggestion, Lisa. I wouldn’t have thought of it on my own.
It isn’t until one does something like this that one sees how many people we do connect with online.

  22. Richard Cockrum Says:

You’re welcome anytime, April. You make the party worth being at.

  23. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Hi Gleb,

We have known one another a long time, haven’t we? It’s been an illuminating journey.

I’m glad to hear you’ll be listening to the podcast. When I first started them, I wasn’t sure how it would go. I’m glad I took the dive.

  24. Richard Cockrum Says:

Blessings to you and yours, Lorraine. Thank you for making Shards what it is.

  25. Richard Cockrum Says:

This is the first time I’ve been called gracious. Now I’m blushing.

    Have a Happy Christmas, Lani!

  26. Richard Cockrum Says:

Thank you for being part of Shards’ history, Aaron. You’re doing a terrific job of making a history of your own. Keep it up.

  27. Richard Cockrum Says:

Thank you for being a part of this world, Alexys. It wouldn’t be the same without you. I’m looking forward to the new year.

Have a blessed Christmas, Stephen. Thank you for being here and the inspiration you are to all of us.

  29. Richard Cockrum Says:

Merry Christmas, Kirk! I’m always up for making more work for you in between shoveling the driveway. :) But I am glad to hear you’ve got the snowblower back.

  30. Richard Cockrum Says:

Happy Holidays to you, Jeanne. I think I prefer doing this once a year. Some things seem easier done in chunks than a little at a time.

  31. Richard Cockrum Says:

Thank you for being here to mention, Doug. You’re one of my daily reads.

I checked the link to Geek with Laptop. It was still good and looked the same, so I assumed Sean was still there. I trust he’s doing well.

  32. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Happy Christmas, sandi!

Gracious and sweet in one day. My wife is going to be shocked. Just shocked. :)

    Thank you for being here.

  33. Lawrence Cheok | A Long Long Road Says:

    Hi Richard,

Wow, quite a list you’ve got.

This is indeed a good Christmas present and good way to celebrate Shard’s birthday. Congratulations.

  34. Ottayan Says:

    Hi,

Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  35. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Hi Lawrence,

I was surprised, very pleasantly so, as I began gathering together the list. We talk one to one, each interaction with only one other person, but yet, in total we find we each affect many, many lives.

    Have a wonderful Christmas.

  36. Richard Cockrum Says:

And a blessed Christmas to you and yours, Ottayan. Thank you for being here.

  37. Abu Aremu Says:

    Rick,

Great to be part of this history. You’ve created a consciousness, and I’m glad to be part of it. This is a memorable Christmas present from you.

Thank you for mentioning! Happy holidays!

  41. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Happy Christmas, Abu!

The most I do is touch a consciousness. I have no original ideas. Just, when fortunate, able to strike a chord that exists in each of us. Thank you for being part of the dance.

Rick. What a great holiday gift! And, like many of the others, I can’t imagine what it took to pull all that information out.

Happy birthday and congratulations on another year. I look forward to another year of Shards of consciousness.

  64. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Happy New Year, Ed.

Pulling out the information really wasn’t complicated. It just took a little time, time well spent.

I’m looking forward to a new year for all of us. To misquote one of my favorite authors,

Oh, the places we will go!

  65. Link Love Gratitude — Creating a Better Life Says:

  66. Patricia - Spiritual Journey Of A Lightworker Says:

Richard, thanks for the link. I was pleasantly surprised to find this today. Today is the first time in awhile that I have had the extra time to wander from blog to blog just reading whatever article catches my attention. That is how I found this article.

  67. Richard Cockrum Says:

I’m glad you had a pleasant surprise today. :)

I hope you enjoyed your reading. We all need time for randomness.

Thank you for being here to include in the list. Have a great new year.

  68. Trevor Says:

    Hi there Richard.

It has been far too long since my last visit. I’ve been distracted by so many things but I’m back at last. This list was a great idea - it would certainly take me ages to compile such a list for each of my blogs, so I hope that there’s a plug-in on the way. (More hints)

Thank you for doing me the honor of mentioning my name early in the article: do I really deserve such lofty accolades? After all - it was merely a comment or two.

  69. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Hi Trevor,

I’m surprised there was no plugin to do this, either. Unfortunately, I won’t be doing one. I have no idea of how to write a plugin for WordPress, and I don’t really want to learn. :)

And yes, you deserve such accolades. It is amazing the effect the early comments have. Not that all comments aren’t meaningful. Well, not counting spam. But the early ones especially do much to quell the doubts about whether anyone is reading what you write, and whether it means anything to them. Thank you.

  70. Danielle Vyas Says:

I have been out of the loop for awhile with school, the kids and politics. I am just seeing the warmth you so generously spread today.

You, my friend, built this blog and it’s readership by being true. Sounds simple, yet so many have been alluded by this essence.

Much love to you and yours.

    Danielle

  71. Richard Cockrum Says:

    Hi Danielle,

It has been a while, but time spent in doing what you believe in and with those you love is time in the loop, not out of it.

One of my fantasies has been to spend my life going to school. Thanks to you and those I’ve met here, I get to do that.

    Be well.
