Sunday Reading 14 October 2007

October 14th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Fall has finally started to leave a mark in this part of the world. Leaves have begun to turn. Temperatures fall to the point at night that some heat is called for in the morning when we get up. As you go outside, the smell of the smoke from wood burning stoves has been added to the other odors of the air. Our teenage cat, Ash, who discovered the joys of exploring the great outdoors, and yes, learning to hunt over the summer, is discovering that staying out all night isn’t quite as much fun when he also has to find a place to stay warm.

Last week Nneka started an excellent series on happiness. It begins with The 7 Keys to Happiness and has continued with a post on each point. So far she has written about courage and generosity.

One of the keys Nneka talks about is non-attachment. A very large aspect of this is how we react, or act, to the events of our daily lives. In How to NOT Take Things Personally: A Practical Guide Christine Kane shows us some ways to put non-attachment in action in our everyday lives.

As I talked about in The Power of Contentment, non-attachment is not a negative or cold attitude. Quite the contrary, it is a very active state. In The rain of acceptance Michael Weir illustrates the attitude. This quote from his posts illustrates the results perfectly

Will you experience freedom?

Or will you know pain even deeper?

I thank you for finding value in the things you read here at Shards. Special thanks to those of you who have found something you thought was worth linking to . These include

Aaron Potts in The Courage to Decide whether or not you even Care, an article which, maybe not so conincidentally, complements Nneka’s article very well.

Gleb Reys in What is Personal Development: part 2. Last week Gleb posted the first submissions to this project to find out what personal growth and development bloggers mean when we talk about personal development. There is another excellent set of submissions this week.

As a reminder, Share a Square is still going strong. If you haven’t made some squares for the projected, or encouraged those you know who crotchet or knit to do so, now is the time to act. Just a few minutes of your time will make a difference for a child.

Oh wow! Rick I came over to thank you for the link love, and followed your link to Christine’s article (quit sending me to good stuff! I’m not supposed to be reading, I’m supposed to be crocheting!). That was such an excellent article! I appreciate the heads up on it. I think it might have been one of those things I needed to hear!

If you went there and read the article, Shelly, it was one of those things you were supposed to hear. :) Besides, we do need a break every once in a while.
