Creating Paradise

October 5th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

I haven’t posted about StoryCorps in quite a while. StoryCorps is a project to collect first person accounts of everyday life in the United States. Friend talks to friend, sister to sister, father to daughter, husband to wife. These are the stories of you and I as we live our lives. They show how we are shaped by, and in turn, shape the world around us one word and touch at a time.

Today’s story, Opening Doors and Hearts at the Plaza Hotel, is about Ed Trinka, who spent 45 years as the doorman at the Plaza Hotel in New York. The last line of Ed’s interview is what struck me.

You know, my father told me years ago … ‘Be such a man and live such a life that if everybody lived a life like yours, this would be God’s paradise.’ And I go by that.

Do we go by that? Can we?
