A Promise is a Promise

October 26th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

A promise is a promise is a promise.

Troy Worman said it. I agree with it. It’s one of the closest things to an absolute in my moral system.

Over the years I’ve learned that a promise is too precious to make lightly. They are too easily broken, both by our own action and inaction, and by circumstances beyond our conscious control. Sometimes they are just wrong. A broken promise effects us for years. It can destroy our reputation. Even worse, it can destroy our own self-image. That’s why I don’t make too many promises and I would rather people don’t promise me things. I’d rather see the old promise them a little and give them a lot than promise a lot and see what I can get out of.

A promise is a promise is a promise.

We say we’ll do something.

We do it.

Not complicated. Sometimes difficult. Often, as soon as we make a promise, we seem to be tested. Do you really mean it?, the world asks.

Do you? Should you? Think carefully.
