Spirit in Gear
September 1st, 2007 by Richard CockrumDo you remember adventure books? In these books you’re give the basic framework of a story, then at key points you make a choice, turn to the page following from that choice, then continue the story. In this way, each person who read the book read a completely different story.
For this weekend Liz Strauss has put together an adventure for us. Here’s my story. What story will you tell?
Steve Olson was thinking about how to change your thoughts , when out of the blue he was in the fast lane. You might think this is strange, but in chaos manor such things happen all of the time. Our brave and quirky hero knew exactly what to do — live the power, but our brave and quirky hero had no zen habits. Seeking help for this dilemma, our hero headed down the road to make it great.
The road passed three creatures — each of them was more interesting than the next.
The first was an urban monk.
The second was the fearless advisor.
The third was a nakedpastor.
Our brave and quirky hero ran the rest of the way, and when he got there, he got another surprise!
“Small dogs paradise!” our hero exclaimed.
“Creating a better life,” the motivational speaker answered.
“I was looking for the good life, when out of the blue I saw the universe in a single atom.” our brave and quirky hero said, knees shaking. “Could you spare the price of rice?”
And so it passed that logical emotions gave our brave and quirky hero mythology between old and new moons AND a balanced life center and all was well.
You might think this is strange, but in evolving times such things happen all of the time.

Doing this weekly? I don’t know. Liz’s framework makes it easy. She’s the master.
You have a great weekend, too!

You’re always a part of the story, Karen. I’ve been trying to write a post for your birthday for three weeks now. This is the closest I’ve gotten.

Hi Lisa,
The piece was a joy to write. Liz’s framework and my feedreader did the hard parts.
It’s a good example of using limits to find creativity.

Hi Ralph,
Thank you. It was a lot of fun to write, too.
What better person to pass on the road to a balanced life than a fearless advisor?

Hi Rick, this was a great adventure story.
I know this was not an easy writing task that Liz set us at all - whatever you might say!
Best wishes

It was a lot of fun to write. Easy is a relative term. It was a lot easier than coming up with everything on our own. The variations in the stories we came up with shows how limits can encourage creativity.
Take care,
Rick
