A Blogging Promise

September 18th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Do you think he knew what he started?

Last week Joe Hauckes at Working at Home on the Internet made a promise.

He didn’t think he had been present enough in the blogging village.

He wanted to make it right.

Joe made a promise. He promised to be a part of the blogging community. And he said how he would fulfill that promise.

  • I will be sure to comment on other Blogs if I can add to the conversation.
  • I will respond to comments on my own Blog.
  • I will acknowledge any links to my Blog with a comment on the linker’s Blog.
  • I will continue to link to other Blogs that are pertinent to a posts content.
  • I will once again be a part of the Blogging Community.

Then Liz made the same promise. Then Chris made the promise. Now I’m making the promise.

And to make sure I remember it, I’m putting this button in the sidebar -

and linking it to Joe’s Promise.

Do you think it’s a worthwhile goal? Do you think it’s a worthwhile promise? You can do it. Do it in your heart, or if you want to tell the world, do it on your blog. If you want to use the button, you can use the one I showed above, or there are green and red buttons to choose from. Link it to your post, or link to Joe’s post.

    Hey Rick,
Actually, when I made the Promise, it was just for people like you, the readers of my Blog and my Bloggy friends like Liz, Chris, you et al.
It seems to be growing for some reason, maybe I’m not the only one who felt lost in such a vast community. ;-)
Thanks for the spiffy buttons, I like the Blue one, I guess I’m partial to dark colors.
Thanks again for being a part of the community, (especially mine) and spreading the word.

    ps, it’s HAUCKES ;-)

    Hello Joe,

Sorry about the mis-spelling. It’s fixed now.

People do tend to run with an idea that strikes a chord. I think you did with this one.

The buttons are there for people to use. So far that’s three of us who like the blue one, all male. I wonder if that means anything.

  3. Alina Popescu Says:

    Hi Rick,

The buttons you’ve made look great. And I guess the red one would fit my sidebar perfectly. So i’ll add it asap :)

  4. Rick Cockrum Says:

    Hello Alina,

Thank you. Joe had a terrific idea, and I’m glad one of the buttons fit your blog’s theme. Enjoy!

  5. Joe Says:

It’s ok Rick, you should see some of the spellings I get, and forget how people pronounce it!
I think the Blue thing for Boys and Pink (Red) for Girls thing. Just a guess.
Thanks again for the Buttons, Im using the Blue.

    I know the feeling, Joe.

We’ll find out about the colors. Well, red and blue at least. So far you’re right.

I admire the intention and commitment you have declared Rick. Especially to go public with it. I look up to people like you and Liz.

I struggle with finding the time to do a decent job of blogging, with all that entails (posting, commenting, linking), while dealing with my life, business, concerns about family, and grappling with my mother’s growing brain tumor. Some weeks I do a lousy job blogging. And I’m learning to be okay with it. To get back and ride the wave when my life and energy allow. I haven’t quite figured out the blog guilt thing, but maybe it will just take care of itself. I CAN promise that I will be nearby.

  9. Rick Cockrum Says:

Robert Heinlein once compared writing to a disease, something you did because you had to, not because you wanted to. You’ve written a book, Deb. You know the feeling.

I think we’ve just chosen blogging as the primary vehicle of our writing. The commenting, linking, just being present are corollaries to that decision. But all this is still something to be done in the context of our lives, not as our lives. This is especially so in the case of strong personal commitments. I wouldn’t call infrequent posting lousy blogging unless it is paying the bills and we see our economic lives suffering as a result. Infrequent posting is just infrequent posting. We enjoy seeing you when we can.

No one in my family has ever had a brain tumor, but I’ve had clients who did. I have an inkling of what your family is going through. My thoughts are with you and your mother.

  10. Deb Call Says:

Thanks for your kind thoughts, Rick. You make the essential distinction - that blogging is done “within the context of our lives, not as our lives.” As I remind myself of that, I find the guilt sliding off my back.

    Hello mahud,

It was Joe’s idea, and a darn good one.

  14. I’m Making Joe’s Promise : TerryStarbucker.com Says:

[…] Rick Cockrum asked these questions about Joe’s Promise and also encouraged us to make our own promise: “Do you think it’s a worthwhile goal? Do you think it’s a worthwhile promise? You can do it. Do it in your heart, or if you want to tell the world, do it on your blog.” He also created the cool button you see at the beginning of the post (there are two other colors too). […]
