What Am I Doing Here (On This Blog)?

August 20th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Over the weekend Steve Olson took up a question from Chris Garrett - What do you think this blog is about?

I’m sure each and every one of us who writes has a reason for why we choose what we write about. For most of us, it says so right on the About page. On mine, for example, I say

The purpose of the articles on this blog is to show you some tools that can help you in the search for happiness in your life, both in the short term and in the long term.

But as I’ve read responses to people who have taken part in this memetic exercise, it has become abundantly clear that Chris is right

…no matter how many times you write about a certain topic, the subject that connects with your audience is what they will remember and is therefore the real theme of your work.

Each of us has our own point of view, our own web of beliefs through which we filter what we read, what we see, and what we hear. The existence of these filters is abundantly clear when reading the comments to the blogs that have taken up this question. That’s what makes this a fascinating exercise. That and the fact that Steve cared enough to ask. :)

So, I’ll continue the question -

1. What do you think my blog is about? – Please, leave an answer in the comments here or on your blog.

2. If you are a blogger, ask your audience what they think your blog is about. Don’t hold back. Jump in! Even more important, and everyone can do this, ask your friends or family what they think the theme of your life is? Does what you believe you’re doing match up with what those you are close to see you as doing?

    Hi Rick,

I think that your blog is a rational exploration of life improvement. The ideas in your recent “Buyer Be Aware” podcast pretty much summed it up for me: you look at various models, decide what works, reject what doesn’t, and keep in mind the whole time that they are only models - they are never perfect explanations of how reality is.

  2. Rick Cockrum Says:

Thank you, Lyman. I never thought of it in quite that way, but you’re right.

  3. Steve Olson Says:

    Rick,

Your blog is an artistic approach to personal development. It is also thought provoking and original. When I come here I am frequently surprised by your posts, which keeps me coming back. And it is also about a new kind of entrepreneurship… one that embraces the new, the original, and the nostalgic all at once. It seems paradoxical but isn’t.

One day I find poetry, another business, and yet another philosophy.

But the thing I like most about your blog is they way you expose your mind - your thoughts - your ideas - and your creativity in an original way.

    Thanks Rick!
