Sunday Reading - 05 August 2007
August 5th, 2007 by Richard CockrumThe Internet Archive is a fantastic resource. It contains books, poetry, audio recordings, movies, cartoons, documentaries, software that is either in the public domain or open source. Take some time. Look around. It is one of the best libraries on the internet.
One of the newest additions to the Internet Archive is an audio version of The Science of Getting Rich, the classic by Wallace D. Wattles. Mike DeWitt at Spooky Action has posted an audio version of The Science of Getting Rich at the Internet Archive. This is the direct link to the recording. I want to give a big round of applause, and a big thank you, to Mike. I know how long my short little podcasts take, so I can imagine how much time Mike spent on this recording. He’s has done us all a service.
One of the points that Mr. Wattles make in The Science of Getting Rich is that in order to participate in a creative transaction, we need to provide more than we receive. In Barriers to Personal Growth - What Service are you Providing? Aaron Potts at Today is that Day asks if we are providing service to our customers, our friends and family, our selves.
It is probably clear, and maybe overclear, to regular readers that I regard meditation as one of the most important things we can do. Many people feel they don’t have the time to meditate. As I’ve said before, we don’t have the time not to meditate. In Difficulties Finding Time to Meditate? Ralph Miller at Fearless Advisor shows some ways we can incorporate meditation into our lives. In the process he shows that meditation is an attitude, an approach to living, rather than something we do just a few minutes a day.
I want to remind you to remember your granny squares. Shelley Kneupper Tucker has had a tremendous response to her call for granny squares to make afghans for a camp for children with cancer and blood disease, but still would like the help of squares from a wide number of individuals. If you know how to crochet, make a few and send them to her. If you know someone who crochets, tell them about the project. This is a terrific way to provide service.
Finally, next week, August 12, 2007, I will be hosting the Personal Development Carnival. This is exciting opportunity for me! I’m looking forward to seeing the posts, which have already started coming in. Submit your personal development posts at Blog Carnival.
Thank you to everyone who visits Shards. Thank you especially to those of you who find enough value in the work here to refer to it in your own work.
Mike DeWitt at Spooky Action linked to the local copy of The Science of Getting Rich in The Science of Getting Rich - Audio Version.
I was fortunate enough to have a post included in The Personal Development Carnival - July 29, 2007 at Lyman Reed’s Creating a Better Life.
Danielle at Modern Musings included links to Shards in Some Good Advice and Puh, Puh, Podcasting.
Karen at Live the Power included us in her Joy Links-July 28, 2007 Edition.
Carolyn Manning of Productivity Goal and Thoughts & Philosophies was kind enough to mention the Share a Square project in We’re All Cool Enough to Share a Square and Sharing Squares; Sharing Ourselves. Thank you, Carolyn!

Rick,
Great stuff… I never knew about the Internet Archive, at least not in that form. Thanks for the great Science of Getting Rich resource!
And thanks for agreeing to host the carnival next week.

Rick,
Thank you for the link and the kind words. The recording was a lot of fun to do (you learn a lot about a book just by reading it out loud).
Mike
P.S. Your podcasts are great!

Lyman,
The Internet Archive is one of my favorite places, though one I don’t get to often enough. I’ve found some good movies there.
I’m happy to be doing the carnival. Submissions have already started rolling in.

Mike,
I’m glad to get the word out about the book. A lot of people will appreciate it.
Thank you for the applause on the podcasts. There are a lot of fun to do.

Rick,
Awesome list of links, and thanks for including my post about providing service. I was just talking about this again yesterday as I was relaxing on the beach and getting ready for another service-filled week on the ‘net!
Also, I am going to go read the post that you linked about meditation. I SO need to understand those concepts more. I have no doubt that I will see many benefits whenever I learn to do it more effectively.

Hey Aaron,
Weekends relaxing on the beach! Aaah.
I have several posts about meditation here. Don’t overcomplicate it. In theory, it’s simple. The benefits - they do come with steady, long-term practice. Day by day you may notice nothing. But look back after a period of time and the effect is apparent.

I know you are right, Rick, and I even have some brain wave audios that would help the process. I already listen to them, but I usually fall asleep, so maybe I’ll just start sitting up so that doesn’t happen!
August 6th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Sitting up would be a good idea, Aaron.
In all actuality, falling asleep is one of the principle obstacles we all encounter, but it is also an indication of progress. If you look at the process for concentrative forms of meditation from the view of brain waves, as you enter into the meditative state you pass through the same changes in brain function that you pass through as you fall asleep. You pass from beta, through alpha, into theta, and perhaps into delta.
The conditioning we have to associate the reclining position with sleep as we do this is difficult to overcome. In a way, what we’re learning to do is send the body to sleep while retaining awareness.

Thank you for mentioning the Share A Square project again! You are a kind hearted soul. I got those lovely squares you sent in the nick of time! I was needing just one other person for two different afghans that volunteers were going to put together. Whew! There were yours in the mail. What a lifesaver you are! I appreciate you!

Hi Shelly,
I’m glad the squares arrived safely at a time they could be used. I saw where you would like a number of people participating to give a variety of squares for each afghan. I’ll have a few more on their way this week.
Good luck with the Share A Square Day this weekend. The project is a wonderful thing you have set in motion.

Thanks, Rick. It will work with the help of people like you!

Thanks for the info.
