Sunday Reading 08 July 2007 - Be The Change You Want to See
July 8th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum
Today’s Sunday Reading will be a bit different than the usual fare (as well as being late and not showing up for most of you until Monday). Lyman Reed at Creating a Better Life has honored Shards with the Bloggers for Positive Global Change award. Thank you, Lyman. I read in a book by Thomas Covenant once a line that has had a deep impact on me. It was
The gift honors the giver
Something like this meme is a gift, and reflects as much, if not more, on the giver and who they are, as on the recipient. I read Lyman’s blog because his stories speak to me whenever I read them. His work with the Personal Development Carnival has acquainted us with more writers and thinkers than we would ever found on our own. His site, Creating a Better Life has been a nexus for personal growth bloggers. Thank you.
The virtual world has developed communities as unique and wide ranging as those that have developed in the three dimensional world. My virtual community, like the 3D one in which I live, is fairly small. I read less than 40 blogs on a regular basis, and, as with the 3D, rely on the people I meet regularly to meet other people. Still, I can think of many writers who are the change they want to see. To name a few -
Liz Strauss at Successful [and Outstanding] Blog(gers). Liz has led the way in showing how to use our voices to touch the lives of those around us, no matter where in the world they may be. You may have noticed the Change the World button in Shards’ sidebar. Back in January of 2007 she started a series of articles devoted to showing how each of us can change the world.
Tony D. Clark is an entrepreneur, artist, and work at home dad who writes at Success From the Nest. His latest post, Your Childhood Dreams Fulfilled, illustrates his holistic view of living. He doesn’t just talk about how to make a living from home. He shows how your world is the result of who you are and how you think. Tony also did a series of podcasts called the Creative Venture. This series is a must listen for anyone seeking to turn they talents into income.
Karen Lynch at Live the Power. Karen is one of the most inspiring writer’s I know. Are You Willing? shows why. She puts herself into each post, and encourages us to put ourselves into our lives rather than living life on the surface.
Dave Schoof at Engaging the Disquiet. Dave is a counselor and a coach whose work focuses on men who have felt the disconnect between the life they are living, and the life they want to live. What he helps us deal with, he went through. I can’t think of a better example of a person who is making a positive change in the world.
If any of you choose to do so, here are the instructions for passing this on:
- Write a post with links to up to 5 blogs that you think are trying to change the world in a positive way.
- In your post, make sure you link to the post that originated the award meme.
- Leave a comment or message for the bloggers you’re tagging, so they know they’re now part of the meme.
- Optional: Proudly display the “Bloggers For Positive Global Change” award badge with a link to the post that you write up.
- Danielle at Modern Musings in her July Fourth Compilation.
- Lyman at Creating a Better Life in Making a Difference - One Blog at a Time.
- Aaron at Today is That Day in Self Improvement and Law of Attraction Link Love, Volume 21.
- Robyn at Brain Based Biz in Face Behind Brain Based Biz.
Thank you all for changing the world!
To each of you who visited Shards this week, thank you. Special thanks to each of you who referenced Shards in one of your posts

Thank you, Lyman. I know that a minimum, one person’s life has been changed by writing - mine - and I am grateful for it.

Hi Rick, you’ve mentioned some folks new to me. I’m going to check these out since you’re recommending them.

Good morning, Robyn.
They’re well worth reading. One of the things the internet has made obvious is how communities, while overlapping to a great extent, have channels out, connections between networks of relationships. The six degrees of separation is much more obvious than in the 3D world.
