Share a Square - Afghans for Kids with Cancer

Have you ever been going about your merry way, reading, thinking, commenting, when something pops out at you from the sidebar of the site you’re on? That happened to me today while I was reading Modern Musings. I caught this touch of color out of the corner of my eye and saw a button that said Afghans for Kids with Cancer. Hmmm..
I clicked on it and was taken to Shelly Kneupper Tucker’s blog, This Eclectic Life. She has started a drive to make granny square afghans to donate to Camp Sanguinity, a camp for children who have been diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders near Fort Worth, Texas.
You and I can help. We can help by spreading the word, and we can help by making granny squares. Shelly has included a pattern for the granny squares she is using, so that should make it easy. If you know how to make a granny square, you know how fast they go. Even if you don’t know how to make a granny square, they’re easy to learn. Right now she is looking at 140 afghans, a little over 6700 squares. If we each make 10 squares, that’s only 670 people. She has people to crochet them all together, so as long as she has the squares by the end of August, she can have the afghans completed for next summer’s camp.
So how about it? Help spread the word on your site, and if you know how to crotchet, make some squares and send them to Shelley. She has contact information in the post about the afghans.

Thank you so much for posting about Share A Square! The response from kind hearted people like you is overwhelming. You should see the beautiful rainbow of colors that is blossoming at my house. Stop right there! Before you do another double-crochet, let me (or you, if you’d prefer) contact Shelly to see if a BIG square will work. I’ve made my share of squares; putting them together gets tedious. I’ll go check it out now.

You go ahead, Carolyn. I’m just along to help on this one. I did get four squares done tonight, though, even with my granddaughters help. One thing about squares is the individual ones go fast.

Just got a note from Shelly; small squares are the way to go for now. She likes the idea of many hands and I can see the point; big squares will be a last resort. That’s fine and you’re right, the little ones do go fast

Sharing Squares; Sharing Ourselves
Shelly Kneupper Tucker at This Eclectic Life recently started Share A Square, a project to give afghans to kids with cancer. Projects need people, people with the initiative to see things through. Most of us are one of them.
