Podcast 23 - Make Yourself an Expert

July 12th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Welcome to episode 23 of the Shards of Consciousness podcast. This episode is based on an article written in October, 2006, called Make Yourself an Expert.

Many people put a lot of stock in the idea of inborn talent. To these, you are a born musician, a born athlete, a born writer. Others believe we are blank slates, our skills depending purely on that to which we devote our attention and practice.

The truth is somewhat in between the two. While we may have a predilection toward a certain set of skills and area of expertise, how good we actually become in that area depends on how much we practice and devote ourselves to it. Research is showing that with approximately 8000 - 10000 hours of practice, we can become a world-class expert in our chosen field. More important than talent is our desire, and our willingness to put our desire into action.
