I mentioned in How I Get My Vibe Up that music is one of the things that lights my fire. Even if I don’t have a radio, cd player, or the computer playing something, melodies and line of tunes are often playing in the background of my mind. When I’m alone they even sometimes make it to my lips. Note I say alone. Most of my family is musical. I grew up listening to my aunts and uncles play and sing. But even my grandaughter puts her hands over my lips when I sing with other people around. Except, that is, when I sing a verse from an old movie, an old Bob Hope comedy I think -

Who’s my little whosit?
Who’s my turtle dove?
Who’s my little whosit?
Who do you love?

Anyway, I’ve recently been asked by Karen Lynch at Live The Power to talk about what song in particular makes my heart sing. She’s heard I’m a Led Zeppelin kind of guy, and that I am. There’s nothing like good metal to get the blood pumping. Given my druthers, when I put something on to listen to its either some kind of hard rock or some kind of space music. Most of the soundtracks in my head came from my parents, though. They grew up in Alabama in the 1930s and 1940s, and the gospel music they sang has lived in my mind. I don’t remember all of them, but verses here and there have stuck -

I went down to the old camp meetin’
Most for to see the sights
But I got such a hearty greetin’
That I went back every night.

They had an old-time gospel preacher
From the good book he’d solemnly pray
And when he started preachin’ ’bout the soul’s salvation

The song I keep coming back to, though, is Cherish, by the Association. I’ve talked about this before, but it has been one of my centers since I woke from a dream one night with it’s words ringing in my mind. It’s a love song, for me between my deepest self and my surface self.
