Five for Dinner

June 1st, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Recently Shama Hyder asked with whom, throughout history, I would like to have dinner.

1. Machiavelli - Poet and political philosopher, Machiavelli’s hand is seen to this day. I would enjoy hearing what he really feels about forms of government.

2. W. B. Yeats - Yeats is my favorite poet, and one of the few to actually make a living from his poetry. He was a leading figure in the Irish literary renaissance, and a member of the Golden Dawn. I would be fascinated by the stories of the people he knew during the time period.

3. Tesla - The father of alternating current, Tesla was a brilliant man. Speaking with him about his ideas before he began to go over the edge would make an evening in itself.

4. Francis Bacon and William Shakespeare - I’m counting these as one. First, if they both show up, the question that many people have argued over the years about them being the same person would be answered. Second, either one of them was brilliant and has exercised a vast influence over Western culture in the past several hundred years.

5. Buckminster Fuller -  I confess, I don’t have anywhere near the grasp on synergetics that I would like, but Fuller’s call to do more with less has been with me for the past 34 years. I would love to hear in his voice some of the stories he has told in his books.

It would be an interesting evening, and over far too quickly. With whom would you like to have dinner?
