Podcast 12 - The Delusion of Multitasking

April 26th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Welcome to Episode 12 of the Shards of Consciousness Podcast. This episode is based on an article originally posted in August of 2006 - The Delusion of Multitasking.

Most of us have heard the phrase jack of all trades, master of none. This saying illustrates the problem with multitasking - you’re not going to be really good at any of the things you try to do at the same time. The idea that we can do many things well simultaneously is a chimera that I’ve tried to discourage for a long time. Lately other people are also pointing out this issue, most notable Ben Yoskovitz in Does Multitasking Really Make You More Productive?.

Attention is a necessary prerequisite to excellence in anything. When you scatter it, you impose limits that do not need to be there. Help yourself. Help your life. Monotask, don’t multitask. :-)

Thank you for listening to this week’s podcast. Think about it. Put it into practice. As always, share with your friends. Let me know how it works for you.
