The Z-Meme Continues
January 7th, 2007 by Richard Cockrum
For a few weeks now the z-list meme has been floating around. It started
focused on marketing blogs, but has morphed into many things. With some
it’s a list of favorites. With others, it’s a list that added to as they
last saw it. The only common condition seems to be that you take your
own blog out of the listing when you follow up on it.
I hadn’t originally planned on participating. In a way, it’s designed to
game Technorati by artificially add links to the blogs listed. I would
rather have a well-thought link to something I’ve actually said any day
of the week.
In another way it was started based on the concept of A-listers and the
rest of us, the Z-listers. This whole A / Z thing I really don’t get.
The basic definition of A-list is wildly popular, while the Z-list is
little read. It has nothing to do with quality. Don’t get me wrong,
popular (or better, well-known) doesn’t necessarily mean bad, just as
unpopular ( or better, little known) doesn’t necessarily mean good. In
that sense the meme should be effective in helping the blogs on the list
become more read. People participate in groupthink. The more popular a
thing is, usually the more popular a thing will become, so raising the
Technorati rank of the blogs on the list will make them appear more
authoritative.
That’s the point of this meme, to get the word out about some of the
lesser known blogs so people will check them out and find what they’re
missing. So, here I am. Check out some of the blogs listed. You’ll be
pleasantly surprised.
