Shards of Consciousness has its Own Domain

January 3rd, 2007 by Richard Cockrum

Life is change.

I woke up New Year’s day to my first gift of the new year. My site was down. My email wasn’t working. (To everyone who tried to mail me, I’m sorry.)

After several calls and emails, I found out the problem. My domain had expired. Yes, I let my domain name expire. Not consciously on purpose, but as a series of things I’ve done, not done, and thoughts I put out.

I haven’t really liked the rdcsoft.com domain name for a long time. It was chosen years ago when I just did software development and was new. A couple of years ago I changed the name of the business to Cockrum Publishing. I never changed the domain name because moving domains is a lot of work, and hundreds of places point to rdcsoft. I know, these things can be worked around, but I didn’t want to at that time. It was something I would get to in the future.

Then last year I started this blog. I started it on the rdcsoft domain to see if I liked blogging, and if anyone else got any use out of what I had to say. By the time I found out the answer is yes to both questions, again, a lot of places were pointing to rdcsoft.com/articles, and moving would be difficult.

Finally, I started the site for the theatre Lady Glynis and own. So by the end of the year three basically unrelated sites were running on one domain when each should have its own domain.

As most of you know, domain names are bought for a minimum of two years. In two years time, a lot can happen. One of the things that happened in my life is that Lady Glynis and I stopped sharing a computer. But, I never changed my email contact address with my domain name registrar, Easyspace. They sent a (that’s right, one notice - no more) notification email to an address that is functional, but I no longer used. I never saw it. Nor did I track when the name was up for renewal. I relied on the notification to let me know. Result - no site comes New Year’s Day.

So how does this relate to beliefs and the thoughts I’ve put out? As I said, I haven’t like the domain name for a while, and thought all three of my sites should be on different domains. I didn’t want to deal with the consequences, so I let things go, even though in the long run things would be better for all three sites. I set things up so I was forced to do the right thing. As you can see, Shards is now on its own domain. Soon, Cockrum Publishing and the Ambridge Family Theatre will be, also.

Now, I’m not saying this was the best way to approach things. It would have been better if I had taken the short term hit to begin with and put the sites on individual domains. It is, though, a case study in how we create our reality.

Boy, it’s about time! ;) I’m glad you made the switch!

Rick, I need to ask you how do you go about doing it since this was on a subdirectory and now on the main domain.

I have a couple subdomain that I need to make the switch on each individual domain. Would mind share with me of the process?

    Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your new domain name, Rick!

This explains why I couldn’t access rdcsoft.com yesterday trying to follow one of the recent trackbacks I got from you.

I think it’s a change for the better. You might want to change your site search and other few things to new domain though.

Once again, I’m happy to be a regular reader of yours, cause I wasn’t affected at all reading your feed.

    All the best!
    Gleb

Thank you, Renee! And thanks for finding me.

Yes, it is about time. I’ll put together a post on the process as soon as I get it finished up. There a couple of odds and ends I have to finish yp, yet.

  4. Rick Cockrum Says:

    Happy New Year, Gleb!

In the long run it will be a change for the better. As you found out with the search (Thank you. I missed that one.), there are few details to finish up.

I’m glad the feed propagated through for you. It was out for a while as I got it pointed the right way. Other people have evidently lost it. They’ll be back, though.

Another detail, I just sent you an email to change my url in the Personal Development Ideas Search database.

    Hi again, Rick!

Just updated the search, but it will be a short while before we’ll see your results found there - after Google indexes your new site for the first time.

    Talk to you later!

I knew something was up! All of a sudden, I started getting a bunch of pings from your site for old posts.

Great domain name, new look, you’re in business. BTW, is the light blue color supposed to be the background for the whole page?

    Happy New Year,
    Nneka

    Happy New Year, Nneka. :-)

Yep, this is what was up and why I’ve been quiet this week. I didn’t think about all the pings going out. I guess they’ll notify people about the new domain name.

I figured the domain name should be the same as the blog name. I’m glad it sounds good. The theme I put up a while back. Yes, the whole page is supposed to be the light blue.

Swanky new digs and new domain Rick. I really like it. Well done! And congrats on making the move. This is no RDCSoft.com (sorry).

  9. Rick Cockrum Says:

    Thanks, Phil! I’m liking it.

Now to get Google to get the site indexed again, and I’m in business. :-)
