Kilbuck

November 4th, 2006 by Richard Cockrum

The washer ate my coat today
Brand new - I never wore it.
I can’t get it fixed. The seamstress closed.
I can fix shoes.
Heel broken?
Tap, tap on the tacks and it’s back. Good as new.
I closed my shop.
No one came anymore.
“It’s cheaper to get a new pair at the store.”

There’s a little town close to home,
Kilbuck.
It grew up by the river - homes, stores, children
Playing as I went to work in the city,
Bringing my check to my wife
To pay for our coats, shoes, the bread
On our plates.

They built a four-lane through Kilbuck
So I could get to my job in the city
Faster, more efficiently.
Now cruisers sit on the highway, collecting
Money as I speed to the city.
Kilbuck is just a stretch of road
Where you slow down.

“Baby found in trash can!”
“News at 11:00.”
I’ll have to get a new coat.
I have a job in the city.
I can pay.
