Using Notescript (Lesson 11)

October 10th, 2006 by Richard Cockrum

Typescript

In the past ten lessons we’ve seen how notescript can save time. We’ve learned the symbols for common words. We’ve learned rules for abbreviation that help us write as quickly as we can think.

Not everyone likes to use pen or pencil and paper. Even when they’re making notes to themselves, they do it in front of a keyboard. Notescript can help these people, too, though with some changes.

  1. Except for using / for and, and \ for the, you cannot use the symbols we have learned.
  2. The simplified alphabet is obviously not used.
  3. We cannot use the special two letter combination for words beginning with out. Use ot instead.
  4. Use th for th, ly for ly, etc.
  5. You cannot put a dot over any letter. Go ahead and use i.

Actually, that isn’t so many changes, is it? If you are a good typist, you may have no need for typescript, but for some of us, it can come in handy. Below are some examples.

  • Go to the store with me today.
  • G t \ stre w. me tdy.
  • We saw the last show at the theatre, and we were the only ones to leave before it was over.
  • W sw \ lst shw at \ thtre, / w w \ only 1s t lve bfre it w ovr.
  • Take a small step today. Take another tomorrow. Many small steps lead to a big change.
  • Tk a sml stp tdy. Tk anthr tmrw. Mny sml stps ld t a bg chnge

Conclusion

It has been a long haul. Eleven lessons. A new alphabet. Rules for letter elimination and letter retention. If you have been following along, if you have been practicing, you will already have seen how notescript saves you time and effort when you write for yourself.

More importantly, you will have seen the increased freedom of thought that comes when using notescript to take notes of lectures or your own thinking. When you are speaking, you don’t have to stop your mind to wait for your mouth to finish what you were saying. Thought is able to flow. Normal writing can be laborious. Word by word you etch upon the page. As your thoughts wait for you to finish their recording, they wander off into different byways and you get caught in random eddies. With notescript, with the recording process occuring at the same speed as the thought process, you can stay in the flow, just as when you are speaking. You have the added bonus that you have a record of your thought left. Godspeed.
