Getting Emotionally Involved With Cartoons

October 21st, 2006 by Richard Cockrum

I watch movies. A lot. Seeing as Lady Glynis and I have a movie theatre, it’s hard not to. Some of my all time favorite movies are animated features. The animation can be cgi or it can be hand drawn. I like them both.

Evidently the Vatican agrees with me. They’ve released a cartoon version of the life of John Paul II called The Friend of All Humanity. According to NPR (National Public Radio), they did this because they felt it would be easier to see the human side of the Pope.

It’s an interesting bit of synchronicity because I decided just a few weeks ago that the main reason I like animated films is it’s easier for me to get emotionally involved with a Shrek or a Woodie than a character from a movie with live actors. Does this say something about me, or does it say something about how our minds work?
