[...] A while back I wrote an article on bare attention, in which I described how the habit mind, or robot, can become stultifying and limiting to living a conscious, creative life. This doesn’t mean that habit is a bad thing. On the contrary, habit can be one of the best friends you have. [...]

Hi Catherine, and welcome.

You are not your thoughts. You are not your emotions. You are a living soul who has a mind, emotions, and a body. Just as your body's health is dependent in large part on how you feed and care for it, your mental and emotional health is dependent on how you think and react to the events of your life. The way you behave, the way you believe, has been learned. Anything that has been learned, can be changed. Major change takes work, often a lot of work, and awareness of your own reaction patterns.

You are in control of your life. Things will happen in your life. How you react is up to you. I would recommend reading through some of the articles on this site, especially those in the 'Beliefs', 'Meditation', and 'Psychology categories and the 'Important Articles' listed on the links page. Read The Nature of Personal Reality. Take a look at other sites in the area of personal development. You will find several listed at Technorati. Put some of the techniques you will learn into practice. Don't try to do too many things, or read so much you get mental indigestion.

Most of your work isn't reading. It is taking time each day to meditate. It is taking time each day to watch the flow of your thoughts to find which ones trigger your emotions. It is realizing that you shape your personality, and you can reshape it. Learning to see yourself as a creator and not a victim is not easy, but do we have anything better to do with our lives?

[...] Meditation has beneficial physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits. You can see specific forms of meditation on this site at Concentrative Meditation, Bare Attention, and Emptiness Meditation. You can also do a web search to find many other sites that talk about this important technique. Many people say they don’t have the time to practice meditation, but it only takes ten to fifteen minutes a day to see beneficial results. A more important question is - do you have the time not to practice? [...]
